Flooring
What the work involves.
Almost every house built in North Texas since about 1960 sits on a concrete slab, and the slab shapes every flooring decision that follows. Concrete gives off moisture vapor from the ground below it, more after a wet spring than in a dry August. It also moves a little as the clay underneath swells and shrinks, which is why hairline cracks show up in older slabs. A floor that suits a second-story bedroom up north can cup, gap or crack here if nobody accounts for the concrete beneath it. Testing the slab's moisture before the floor goes down is a normal part of doing the job properly.
Luxury vinyl plank has become the most common choice for North Texas homes for good reasons. The core is waterproof, so a slab that gives off some moisture or a kitchen with a dishwasher leak does not ruin it. Rigid core planks, sold as SPC, are the more dent-resistant type, and the wear layer is the number to compare between products: 12 mil suits a quiet household, and 20 mil holds up better to large dogs and heavy traffic. Vinyl expands in heat, so rooms with a wall of west-facing glass need the proper expansion gap at the edges and a product rated for direct sun.

The Difference
What to know before you decide.
Hardwood on a slab is almost always engineered hardwood, a real wood top layer bonded to a stable plywood base, either glued down or floated over an underlayment with a vapor barrier. Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor and is sensitive to the humidity swings that come when the air conditioning runs all summer and shuts off in the fall. Engineered boards look the same once installed and handle those swings far better. The flooring should sit in the house for a few days before it is installed so it settles to the indoor humidity.
Laminate costs less than vinyl or hardwood and resists scratches well, which makes it a practical floor for bedrooms and living areas. Standard laminate does not like standing water at its seams, so newer water-resistant lines are the better pick near a kitchen or an entry. Carpet still belongs in bedrooms and media rooms, and the pad underneath does more for comfort and wear than most people expect. A better pad often makes a mid-grade carpet feel like a more expensive one.
Tile is the most durable floor you can put on a slab and the least forgiving of one. Porcelain absorbs less water than ceramic and suits wet areas and patios. Because a slab can crack, tile over concrete should go down on a crack isolation membrane, which keeps a hairline crack in the concrete from running straight through the tile above it. Large-format tile also needs a flat slab, so high and low spots get ground or leveled before any tile is set.
We install flooring from Shaw, Mohawk, LW Floors and CorTec, which covers the range from budget-friendly carpet to premium hardwood and rigid core vinyl. Flooring care after installation is simple and it matters: sweep or vacuum grit that acts like sandpaper underfoot, put felt pads on furniture legs, and use a pH-neutral cleaner. Steam mops void the warranty on many vinyl and laminate floors, so check before you use one.
For budgeting, installed flooring in the Fort Worth area commonly runs about $3 to $7 per square foot for carpet or laminate, $4 to $9 for luxury vinyl plank, $8 to $15 for engineered hardwood and $9 to $18 for tile. Removing the old floor and leveling the slab add to that. Our flooring crew is separate from the roofing crews, and financing is available. Call (817) 558-6997 for a free estimate.

Flooring, answered.
What is the best flooring for a house on a concrete slab?
Luxury vinyl plank is the most forgiving choice, because its core is waterproof and it tolerates some moisture from the slab. Engineered hardwood and porcelain tile also do well on concrete when they are installed with the right underlayment or membrane.
Can hardwood go directly on a slab?
Engineered hardwood can, glued down or floated over a vapor barrier. Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor over the concrete, so engineered is the usual choice on a slab.
How much does new flooring cost per square foot?
Installed prices in the Fort Worth area commonly run $3 to $7 for carpet or laminate, $4 to $9 for luxury vinyl plank, $8 to $15 for engineered hardwood and $9 to $18 for tile. Removal and slab leveling add to that, and a free estimate gives you the real number.
Will a crack in my slab ruin new tile?
It can if the tile is set straight onto the concrete. A crack isolation membrane under the tile absorbs small slab movement and keeps a hairline crack from running through the tile.
Which flooring brands do you install?
We install Shaw, Mohawk, LW Floors and CorTec. Between them they cover carpet, laminate, luxury vinyl and hardwood at a range of price points.
