Windows
What the work involves.
Windows are where a North Texas house loses the fight with the sun. A west-facing window on an August afternoon lets in a surprising amount of heat, and the air conditioning runs to pay for it. Older single-pane glass in aluminum frames, common in houses built through the 1970s and 1980s, is the worst case: aluminum conducts heat straight through the frame, and a single pane blocks very little of it. Replacing those windows is one of the more direct ways to bring a summer cooling bill down.
Two numbers on a window's label tell you most of what you need. The U-factor measures how much heat moves through the whole window, and lower is better. The solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC, measures how much of the sun's heat the glass lets in, and in a climate like ours it matters more than it does up north. For glass that faces south or west, look for an SHGC around 0.25 or lower. Double-pane glass with a low-E coating and argon gas between the panes is the standard way to get there.

The Difference
What to know before you decide.
Some signs that a window is finished are obvious and some are not. Fog or streaks between the two panes mean the seal has failed, the insulating gas has leaked out, and the glass now performs little better than a single pane. Drafts you can feel on a windy day, sashes that stick or will not stay up, cracked frames and condensation that keeps forming on the inside all point the same way. Hail adds its own list: cracked or broken glass, torn screens and dented frames, which are often covered under the same claim as the roof.
Not every problem calls for a new window. If the frame is sound and only the glass has fogged or cracked, the sealed glass unit can usually be replaced on its own, which costs far less than a full replacement. Worn balances, broken locks and tired weatherstripping are repairs. When the frame itself has failed, or the house still has original aluminum windows, replacement is the better use of the money.
Most replacement windows go in as inserts, fitted inside the existing frame opening. On the brick homes that fill most of Johnson County, an insert leaves the brick and the exterior trim undisturbed. Full-frame replacement, where the old frame comes out down to the studs, is the right call when there is rot or water damage around the opening. Soft wood at the sill or stains on the drywall under a window are the usual clues, and both are worth checking before choosing the type of install. Vinyl is the most common frame material for replacement windows here because it insulates well and never needs paint. Replacement windows are built to the measurements of each opening, so there is a wait between ordering and installation.
Shades and window treatments do the other half of the work. Cellular shades trap a layer of air against the glass, and solar shades cut glare and heat while keeping the view, which matters in a sunroom or a living room with a wall of west-facing glass. On a house where replacement windows are not in the budget yet, shades on the hottest rooms are a reasonable first step.
As a general range, installed vinyl replacement windows in the Fort Worth area commonly run $600 to $1,200 per opening for standard sizes, with large picture windows, bay windows and specialty shapes costing more. Replacing a single sealed glass unit typically runs $200 to $600 depending on size. Windows are handled by our own windows crew, separate from the roofing crews, and financing is available. Windows, answered.
How much do replacement windows cost in the Fort Worth area?
Standard vinyl replacement windows commonly run $600 to $1,200 per opening installed. Large, bay and specialty windows cost more, and we give you an exact figure after measuring at a free estimate.
Can you replace just the foggy glass?
Yes, as long as the frame is sound. Fog between the panes means the seal has failed, and replacing the sealed glass unit alone costs far less than a new window.
Will new windows lower my electric bill?
They usually do when they replace single-pane glass or old aluminum frames, especially on west and south walls. The gain is smaller when the existing windows are already double-pane and in good shape.
Does insurance cover hail damage to windows?
Often, yes, under the same wind and hail coverage that pays for a damaged roof. Cracked glass, torn screens and dented frames should be documented with the rest of the storm damage, and we help with the claim process.
Do you have to tear out the brick to replace windows?
No. Most replacement windows on brick homes go in as inserts inside the existing frame, so the brick and exterior trim stay as they are. Full-frame replacement is only needed where there is rot or water damage around the opening.
